Modus21, LLC (Modus21), a business technology consulting firm, today announced it is expanding its operations in Charleston County. The company’s $1.1 million investment will create 80 new jobs.

Founded in 2004, Modus21 is a small business headquartered in Charleston providing technology consulting services to commercial and defense customers. The company’s core capabilities include Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), agile software development, DevSecOps, systems and software integration, cloud computing, business process re-engineering and automation, and cybersecurity services.

Located at 1362 McMillan Ave. in North Charleston, Modus21 is expanding its existing corporate facilities and equipment to support new job creation and its Cloud Innovation Lab (CIL).

ABA Automotive establishes Charleston County operations

Keel expanding Charleston County operations

Keel, a defense manufacturer, today announced it is expanding its operations in Charleston County. The company’s $67 million investment will create 170 new jobs at Keel’s Yonges Island shipyard.

Headquartered in Ladson, Keel is an advanced manufacturer of submarine modules and components, aircraft carrier components, and other complex structures for the U.S. Navy and broader defense industry.

Located at 4194 Highway 165 in Meggett, Keel’s expansion includes a new state-of-the-art prep and paint facility to support the manufacture of components and modules for submarines and aircraft carriers for the U.S. Navy.

Eaton expanding Charleston County operations

Eaton, an intelligent power management company, today announced it is expanding its aerospace manufacturing operations in Charleston County. The company’s $46 million investment will create more than 50 new jobs.

In the aerospace industry, Eaton is a leading provider of hydraulic, fuel, oxygen, fluid and air conveyance, electrical, motion control and engine solutions, as well as aftermarket service and support, for commercial and military aircraft.

Eaton will construct a new facility adjacent to its existing facility, located at 7230 Cross County Road in North Charleston, to expand its capability in additive manufacturing, machining, assembly and testing to support a new program win and increase capacity and readiness for future program wins. The new facility will produce complex hydraulic pumps and motors serving U.S. commercial and defense aerospace platforms.

Charles River Laboratories expands Charleston County operations

Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. (Charles River), a leading global drug discovery, development, testing and manufacturing solutions provider, today announced it is expanding its operations in Charleston County. The company is investing $13 million in its microbial solutions facility.

Founded in 1947, Charles River provides products and services to help expedite the discovery, early-stage development and manufacture of drugs and therapeutics. The company’s Charleston County site was established more than 30 years ago and offers a portfolio of quality control testing solutions.

Charles River will construct a new cleanroom at its existing site to install automation equipment to produce cartridges for its portable testing system (PTS), as well as its multi-cartridge system (MCS). Charles River’s proprietary, FDA-licensed cartridge technology reduces the need for limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) or recombinant raw materials by 95% compared to traditional testing methods, while reducing hands-on time (HOT) and, ultimately, technician variability.

In 2023, Charles River introduced its latest innovation, Endosafe Trillium, an animal-free endotoxin testing solution which strengthens the company’s commitment to sustainability while maintaining patient safety as the top priority. Additionally, the Charleston site recently launched a cartridge recycling program with TerraCycle, which recycles and repurposes water testing cartridges into new products such as outdoor furniture, storage bins, park benches and other durable goods.

Operations are expected to be online in the fourth quarter of 2025.

With more than 80 years of experience, Alpha Sheet Metal Works specializes in steel, stainless steel and aluminum metal products. The company’s products range from individual parts to complete automated assemblies.

Alpha Sheet Metal Works will add 24,000 square feet next to its existing facility, located at 9525 Hamburg Road in Ladson, to increase its Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining, assembly and large-format fabrication capabilities.
